Cordialement,

Hassane MEZINE,
Réalisateur de « Fanon hier, aujourd’hui »

//VERSION EN ANGLAIS//

It is very difficult for me to refuse to participate to an African film Festival. I know how important it is to show African realities, stakes and stories through cinema that is a fantastic tool that can be very enlighting and educative.

I did screen my movie in the last four years in several African film festivals such as AFF New York, Washington African Diaspora International Film Festival, AFF New Zealand, Encounters in South Africa, FESPACO in Ouagadougou, Panafrican Film Festival Los Angeles, Cinemafrica in Stockholm, Africa in Motion Film Festival in Edinbourgh…and this is with sincere regret that I have to inform you that I will not be sending a copy of my documentary Fanon yesterday, today to the ATESIB! African Film Festival in Tel Aviv as it is supported by official israeli cultural Institutions.

I fully endorse the BDS movment and would have done the same with any Apartheid regime in South Africa or elswhere. In my opinion, the zionist state of Israel is part of the imperialist family and is not a friend of Africa. Especially at a time when a few states from the Global South are normalizing with the racist regime of Israel to the detriment of their own people.

No compromise !

I just want to end this message with words from the great Panafrican, internationalist and anti-imperialist leader Thomas Sankara :

« I speak out in indignation as I think of the Palestinians, whom this most inhuman humanity has replaced with another people, a people who only yesterday were themselves being martyred at leisure. I think of the valiant Palestinian people, the families which have been splintered and split up and are wandering throughout the world seeking asylum. Courageous, determined, stoic and tireless, the Palestinians remind us all of the need and moral obligation to respect the rights of a people. Along with their Jewish brothers, they are anti-Zionists. »

Thomas SANKARA, United Nations General Assembly, in New York City, on 4 October 1984

About BDS

Israeli government officials have summed up how Israel instrumentalizes culture to cover up its grave violations of international law. « We are seeing culture as a hasbara [propaganda] tool of the first rank,” one official admitted, “and I do not differentiate between hasbara and culture. »

Israel’s cultural institutions are part and parcel of the ideological and institutional scaffolding of Israel’s regime of occupation, settler-colonialism and apartheid against the Palestinian people. These institutions are clearly implicated, through their silence or active participation, in supporting, justifying and whitewashing Israel’s occupation and systematic denial of Palestinian rights.

When international artists perform at Israeli cultural venues and institutions, they help to create the false impression that Israel is a “normal” country like any other. The absolute majority of Palestinian writers, artists and cultural centers have endorsed the cultural boycott of Israel, and there is a growing number of anti-colonial Israelis who support BDS, including the cultural boycott of Israel.

Best,

Hassane MEZINE,

Film Director of Fanon yesterday, today
